Former Bahamian Senator in Police Custody one more night arraignment Friday

first_imgFacebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppBahamas, July 20, 2017 – Nassau – Former PLP Senator, Frank Smith will spend a second night in police custody after his day in court today was delayed to tomorrow. Smith was reportedly interrogated by Police and was today escorted into the courthouse, wearing a dark coloured suit, looking clean shaven but handcuffed at the back and with head upright for a late afternoon session but his file was not ready. This means it is one more night in a police jail cell and a return to court tomorrow for the former chairman of the Public Hospitals Authority.   Frank Smith’s attorney, Damian Gomez, QC expressed shock at the fact that the file on Smith was not ready and told one media house that it was a veiled attempt to prevent a bail application for Mr. Smith.Smith has been in custody since Wednesday at 11am, he is due to return to court where Joyann Ferguson-Pratt is Chief Magistrate, tomorrow at 11am and was accompanied at court by his wife, father in law Sir Franklyn Wilson and mother in law, former President of the Senate and judge herself, Sharon Wilson.   While there is speculation of the impending charges against Smith, in court tomorrow is where we will know for sure what his alleged crimes are.#MagneticMediaNews#FrankSmithincustody Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp Related Items:#FrankSmithincustody, #magneticmedianewslast_img read more

To cut costs UAF merges Journalism and Communications majors

first_imgOne of numerous cost saving realignments within the University of Alaska system, the University of Alaska Fairbanks Journalism and Communications departments have merged. Professor Charles Mason said the merger should save money, and shore up the journalism department, which has seen a declining number of majors in recent years.Listen Now ”The point of this merger is to have, probably, a smaller core faculty over the long run, but increase the number of majors in the two programs together so that it’s a single department with a reasonable number of majors and a pretty large number of students,” Mason said. “And the savings will come in through that.”Mason says the combined journalism-communications program has more than sixty majors, and a dozen graduate students. He said the merger, which includes plans for co-location at a single facility, has resulted in the elimination of an administrative job, but that no other cuts are currently planned. He noted that the department hopes to hire for an open journalism professor position.last_img read more

China defence minister justifies Tiananmen crackdown

first_imgChina`s defence minister Wei Fenghe (L) attends the opening of the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue summit in Singapore on 31 May 2019. Photo: AFPThe 1989 crackdown on protesters in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square was the correct policy, China’s defence minister said Sunday.”That incident was a political turbulence and the central government took measures to stop the turbulence which is a correct policy,” General Wei Fenghe told a regional security forum in Singapore.Speaking to fellow defence ministers, top military officers and academics from all over the world, Wei questioned why people still say that China “did not handle the incident properly”.”The 30 years have proven that China has undergone major changes,” he said, adding that because of the government’s action “China has enjoyed stability and development”.Beijing was the epicentre of student-led protests 30 years ago, with hundreds or possibly more than 1,000 killed by soldiers at the square on 4 June 1989.last_img

If parents are good at maths so would be children

first_imgThe study specifically explored inter-generational transmission – the concept of parental influence on an offspring’s behaviour or psychology – in mathematic capabilities. “Our findings suggest an intuitive sense for numbers has been passed down knowingly or unknowingly from parent to child. Meaning, the math skills of parents tend to ‘rub off’ on their children,” said lead researcher Melissa E. Libertus, Assistant Professor at University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, US.  Also Read – Add new books to your shelfThe study revealed that the performance levels for early school-aged children on standardised mathematic tests could be reliably predicted by their parent’s performance in similar examinations. Specifically, major correlations in parent-child performance in such key areas as mathematical computations, number-fact recall, and word problem analysis were observed. In addition, the children’s intuitive sense of numbers – that is, the ability to know that 20 jelly beans are more than 10 jelly beans without first counting them – is predicted by their parents’ intuitive sense of numbers, the researchers said. Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsive“We believe the relationship between a parent and a child’s math capabilities could be some combination of hereditary and environmental transmission,” Libertus added. The findings represent the first evidence of intergenerational transmission of unlearned, nonverbal numerical competence from parents to children. The study is an important step toward understanding the multifaceted parental influences on children’s mathematic abilities. “This research could have significant ramifications for how parents are advised to talk about math and numbers with their children and how teachers go about teaching children in classrooms,” Libertus noted, in the paper published in the journal Developmental Science. For the study, the math abilities of 54 children between the ages of five and eight as well as 51 parents – 46 mothers and five fathers – between the ages of 30 and 59 were assessed.last_img read more
