Photo Roberto Chile HAVANA, Cuba (SJ) — Children, youths, senior citizens, artists and Cubans from all walks of life on Saturday celebrated the 85th birthday of former president, Fidel Castro.From west to east and throughout Cuba, parks and plazas in towns and cities held cultural activities to pay homage to the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution. Visual artists and photographers paid tribute to Fidel with a painting exhibition, which was opened on August 12 at the Jose Marti Memorial, in the Square of the Revolution.The exhibition includes paintings by renowned artist Nelson Domingues and photographer Alex Castro, son of Fidel, and it celebrates from the perspective of arts the revolutionary life of the leader of 1953 assault on the Moncada Garrison and later creator of the Rebel Army that defeated the Batista dictatorship in 1959 with the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, Radio Havana Cuba reported.The international radio station also hosted a homage to Fidel on Friday 12 by members of solidarity groups from different countries. On the eve of Fidel´s birthday and in the presence of hundreds of Cubans authorities, delegations and the diplomatic community, the Oswaldo Guayasamin Foundation held a concert in homage of Fidel at the Havana-based Carl Marx Theater, which was called “Serenade of FIDELity.”On behalf of the Guayasamin family, Alfredo Vera gave the opening remarks to the concert by stressing the life and work of Fidel Castro by saying: “All humankind is yours, brother Fidel!” The gala included singers from nine Latin American nations who were applauded by thousands of assistants.Meanwhile, the local press, Granma and Juventud Rebelde newspapers as well as many webpages of provincial media outlets printed on their first pages articles about the concert with headlines like “Cuba and Latin America Sing to Fidel”, “Latin America Offered us its Heart”, Efe reported.Youths in the eastern province of Holguin, 470 miles from Havana, set up a camping site by the house where Fidel was born. The action included cultural activities, book presentations and voluntary blood donations, ACN reported, cited by Efe.Cuban television broadcast a panel called “Fidel, a Soldier of Ideas” on the primetime show “The Round Table” with the participation of renowned scholars, journalists, sports people and other personalities.In a message to the Cuban leader during a phone conversation, Russia´s President Dmitri Medvedev wished Fidel a happy birthday and he said that he is an honourable example of the service to the homeland and the people.”“Because of this, you keep being the legendary commander and national leader for the new generations of Cubans,” said Medvedev, who stressed the “crucial contribution” by Fidel Castro to friendship and cooperation between Russia and Cuba.Caribbean News Nowlast_img
