Here Are Vintage Photos of Cats Doing Human Things

first_img Sure, countless cats and dogs are now Instagram-famous for getting into hilarious and adorable human-like situations, but the concept has been around for over a century. In 1914, photographer Harry Whittier Frees shot an entire series of photos showing costumed cats in human situations, like doing the laundry, baking a cake, or having a wedding. His photographs are tucked away in the archives of the Library of Congress, a collection of viral-worthy images that also feature puppies.According to NPR, Frees used live models and no photo trickery (no Photoshop — or digital cameras — yet in the first half of the 20th century). “He rents all models from neighbors, breeders or pet shops,” Life magazine explained in a March 1, 1937, profile. His photographs of cutesy animals became famous and were featured in postcards, calendars, and magazines. Frees died in 1953.Planting Time(Photo Credit: Harry Whittier Frees / Library of Congress)The Wedding(Photo Credit: Harry Whittier Frees / Library of Congress)Fire!(Photo Credit: Harry Whittier Frees / Library of Congress)Pumping for Water(Photo Credit: Harry Whittier Frees / Library of Congress)Skipping Rope(Photo Credit: Harry Whittier Frees / Library of Congress)Hanging Up the Wash(Photo Credit: Harry Whittier Frees / Library of Congress)Doing the Dishes(Photo Credit: Harry Whittier Frees / Library of Congress)The Acrobats(Photo Credit: Harry Whittier Frees / Library of Congress)On the Fast Express(Photo Credit: Harry Whittier Frees / Library of Congress)Birthday Party!(Photo Credit: Harry Whittier Frees / Library of Congress)Ready for a Dive(Photo Credit: Harry Whittier Frees / Library of Congress)Ten Pins(Photo Credit: Harry Whittier Frees / Library of Congress)The Aviator(Photo Credit: Harry Whittier Frees / Library of Congress)More on Geek.com:Grumpy Cat, Adorable Furball and Viral Meme Sensation, Is DeadLil Bub’s Genetics Reveal Key Clues About Her Unique Cat FeaturesWatch: Japanese Company Creates Traffic Safety Video for Cats Firefighters Respond to Fire Alarm at Shelter, Discover Cat Triggered ItCat Gets Stuck in Washing Machine for 35-Minute Cycle Stay on targetlast_img read more
